Kennebunk’s Waterhouse Center Ice Skating Rink

November 22nd, 2014 by InsideOut Solutions

Waterhouse Center Ice Skating Rink in KennebunkWinter just got a little friendlier and a lot more fun in Kennebunk with the addition of the Waterhouse Center ice skating rink!

This is not to imply that Kennebunk winters aren’t already fun and friendly but, let’s face it, an ice skating rink ups the fun factor with measurable results.

Opening on October 11th, 2014, Waterhouse Center ice skating rink is the brainchild of Geraldine Waterhouse. Seeing local children skating at a temporary rink in downtown Kennebunk spurred memories of her own childhood. Recalling the many winter days of her own youth spent happily ice-skating away the hours with friends, Geraldine wanted to offer more permanent access to this beloved pastime for the youth of today’s Kennebunk, Kennebunkport.

Establishing the Waterhouse Youth Endowment Program with the help of her daughter, Paige Herr, Geraldine Waterhouse proceeded to get the ball rolling with a $1.5 million donation. Local residents and businesses, enchanted with the idea, followed suit with donations of time and money. Consequently, some 60 years after the memories that inspired it, Kennebunk has a place to ice skate during the winter months!

The Waterhouse Center pavilion and rink will serve as an ice-skating center between the months of December to mid-March, with the pavilion doubling as a farmer’s market and event center the rest of the year. The skating rink will be used for inline skating during the warmer months.

Public skating at Waterhouse Center Ice Skating Rink begins officially on Friday, November 21st, 2014, at 5pm, with a Skate Swap scheduled for Saturday, November 22nd, 2014, from 10am to noon.

Of course, all this talk of “for the kids” and “youth” doesn’t mean anyone over the age of 18 can’t use the skating rink! Age is mental, as they say, so, if you’re young at heart, be sure to bring your ice skates (or inline skates) along on your next Kennebunkport vacation!
